Tanzania Travel Insurance Update 2026: What You Need to Know
Planning a holiday to Tanzania or Zanzibar? International travellers should understand the mandatory inbound travel insurance rules that took effect for Tanzania Mainland on 1 October 2026, according to a notice issued by the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC).
Here are the key points to know before travelling.
- Do You Need Travel Insurance?
Foreign visitors entering Tanzania Mainland must follow the applicable mandatory inbound travel insurance requirements. Zanzibar also has its own insurance requirements for eligible visitors.
- Avoid Paying Twice
According to the ZIC notice, travellers with a valid, applicable policy covering the same journey should not need to purchase duplicate insurance simply because their itinerary includes both Zanzibar and Tanzania Mainland.
Keep your insurance certificate and QR code for verification.
- Your First Point of Entry Matters
The applicable insurance depends on where you first enter Tanzania:
Zanzibar first: Apply through ZIC's official insurance portal.
Tanzania Mainland first: Apply through National Insurance Corporation's portal.
- Who Is Exempt?
Qualifying travellers from East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) member states are exempt from the Tanzania Mainland requirement. This does not automatically exempt them from Zanzibar's separate insurance requirements.
- How Long Is the Policy Valid?
The ZIC notice states that its applicable policy covers up to 92 days. Travellers should check the policy's terms and validity dates before departure.
